Membership
EIM's membership ranges from the far north to the south of Europe. It also includes some of Europe's
largest railway networks. The members are the infrastructure managers in Belgium, Denmark, Finland,
France, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK and Norway. In 2010, High Speed 1 joined EIM as an associate member and PKP PLK became a candidate member.
Some of the members are working within a holding company structure. However all work in accordance
with the European directives of the first railway package (2001/14). All members have separate transport
activities from infrastructure management activities and keep separate accounts.
Members Statistics
EIM's members also directly employ a total of 79,000 people in Europe. It is estimated that the level of
indirect employment including maintenance staff is over 250,000 people.
The 10 EIM members represent 44% of the total length of lines in the EU states (statistics available for EU 25 & EFTA 2).
A total of over 207 billion passenger kilometres are carried each year on these lines. This represents almost 35% of all rail passenger traffic in the 27 EU countries.
Freight
The rail freight industry in Europe is in the early stages of market opening.
EIM members carry over
35% of all freight traffic in Europe.
The markets are commercially driven at various levels in each of the
member countries.
Customer focus is becoming more important as some EIM members have as
many as seven (and the number is increasing steadily) different rail freight operating companies com-
peting.
An intermodal approach and continued focus on developing rail corridors are essential for the
success of the rail freight industry.
Rail freight market share is expected to continue growing in the
coming years as both environmental and congestion issues are becoming more and more significant.
